As a workaround you may try installing the Windows 7 drivers in compatibiliy mode for Windows 8.

Canon 8400f Software

I previously posted a question about this scanner not working in Windows 7 (receive a message that i needed a WIA driver) and got a response to update the driver/firmware from Canon, the manufacturer. If that did not work, was told to search for 'Services.msc' and see if WIA was 'started'. I have updated the driver and did a search. Services.msc shows that Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) is 'started' and automatically is set to that position. I checked with ArcSoft for an update of the software and was advised that I needed ArcSoft Photoimpressions Gold 6.5. I downloaded a trial version to make sure this would correct the issue before I spend the $40 for the update. It has not fixed the issue. When I open the Canoscan Toolbox (latest version is 4.9.3.2) and try to scan, the program 'hangs'. I also went into the properties for the Toolbox and set it for compatibility with Windos Xp since that was the version of Windos I formerly used and in which I knew the CanoScan Toolbox worked. still no success. any suggestions?
